BSP Immersion Programme 2007

18 Nov to 14 Dec... 25 days, 600+ hours, 36000+ minutes! it seems so long but yet all happened so fast and now... it's over!

first day of immersion programme, we had a school tour. The school we are attached to is 北京师范大学第二附属中学, in short 北大二附中. honestly speaking, they are not very warm-hearted in welcoming us although they have a nice school compound (what's the use of having a nice school environment but dao-ing teachers and students?) tt makes our stay in beijing boring and unplesant... =(

After that, it's shopping time! hooray... haha! it's not the quality of products that is satisfactory, but i find the process of 杀价 enjoyable! lol... i can tell u that shopping in china is far more enjoyable than any where else... =) look at this!

when u find this type of products, one thing should go into your mind: How do you spell China? haha... this is the secret qn that we remind one another to be careful of being scammed! nevertheless, shopping is fun! i still remember viividly how i "quarrel" the price of a jacket that has a price tag of RMB $640 at a wholesale market...

after 12-hr of tiring-yet-fun-filled train ride, we finally arrived at xi'an on 24 Nov 2007! since we didnt eat much for dinner on train, we had buffet for breakfast at a hotel! and believe it or not, we had breakfast there every morning! woohooo!!! =P

25 Nov 2007 (Sun)... we had our homestay activities!

when we were about to leave 汉阳陵, we were informed by the security guard that the president of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, was oso arriving at noon... haha =) but due to our tight schedule, we couldnt wait till noon to see him in person, which is quite SAD! nevertheless, i was honoured to have stepped on the red carpet before president Nicolas Sarkozy... haha =D

this was wad happened... bcos my host's father (Associate Professor of Xi'an JiaoTong University... i know theres no link, but i juz wanted to let u know... haha) thought that it was very troublesome to make one big detour in order to avoid stepping on the red carpet... so in the course of saving time, we stepped on the carpet to get across... haha... in the end we got a mini-scolding from a policeman stationed there. XD

well... from 汉阳陵 we headed to the city to have lunch - 裤带面! this is a special kind of noodle that you will nvr find in s'pore bcos there is only ONE piece of noodle in a big bowl... why? i oso dunno... haha.

basically that's the most interesting part of my xi'an trip... 28 Nov 2007, we left xi'an and reached beijing the next day!

to release our frustration towards the cold treatment from the teachers and students in beijing, we bought tonnes and tonnes of tibits from their school canteen for PLEASURE?! haha. thats bcos each of us had a RMB$240 food card to spend on breakfast and dinner (normally we had lunch outside sch), and their breakfast and dinner cost us not more than $4 a day, so we SPAMMED tibits!!! LOL! XD as quoted from our ex-dean-of-studies Ms Yeo, "I have never seen teenagers eat so much tibits before in my life!" cant imagine how much tibits we had? see for yourself then... XD

Day 1
reached costa sands at 3pm and met jonneo and huihua! then came jiahong, vinette and liping. watched secret and played daidi while waiting the others to arrive...

at nite, we had BBQ... i guess this is the most successful BBQ in my life! haha... took 3 hours for us just to set up the fire... all bcos of the made-in-china charcoal. lol

while bbq-ing, we had a lively debate too. the motion is: whether the satay stickes are shu or shou. jiahui said it is shu but huihua argued it is shou. wanna check up the dictionary but obviously nobody brought... haha. anyway, i juz checked up the dictionary and both shu and shou are acceptable. =)

bbq ended at around 10.30pm. nobody want to sleep yet, so we played mahjong and poker and mahjong and poker till 7am... the room just becomes a gambling den all of a sudden. haha. mahjong and poker are the two most renowned and powerful money-reducing agent in our chalet, though they can be a really powerful money-oxidising agent to those with beginner luck... hahaha XD

Day 2
had breakfast at Mac... followed by poker and mahjong AGAIN! *sigh
had dinner at food court... there we saw a big fat mouse being stomped to death and kicked about by a stall-holder in his thirties. it was DISGUSTING! no wonder that was the only C class stall in the food court... luckily i didnt purchase the food from that stall!!! *a sigh of relief
anyway, we had sth diff after dinner... at first we wanted to take a stroll at the beach, but ended up playing catching + freeze and melt at a nearby playground. hahaha...
of course we had mahjong and poker A-G-A-I-N... sad!
tong-xiao somemore. DOUBLE sadness!
and due to some reason, i forgot to kong! TRIPLE sadness!
i even LOST COUNT of my losses! ULTIMATE sadness!
everything ended at 5am, so we managed to catch some sleep afterwards.

再过五天就是"一年一度"的剑桥o水准高级华文考试了！这一周，华中的全体中四生可说是"普天同庆"地庆祝高级华文节，脸上丝毫没有一点的焦虑或紧张。虽然老师给我们的作业堆积如山，但真正把它们做完的恐怕寥寥无几吧！虽说华文是我的最强科目，但此刻的我心中忐忑不安的，不知是自己准备还不够充足，还是对这玩意儿摸不着头脑呢？

今天我们做了两篇的长文缩短。很多吧？哈哈... 重点是那得分点实在是荒谬极了，什么这几点很相似，只取一个就行了；其实他们就是三个截然不同的概念！自爱、上进和守法，你说他们是同一个概念吗？撇开这个不谈，就算他们概念相似，你告诉我要去哪一个才对呢？三选一就可以草率了事吗？

更令人思想混淆的是，"水平提高不显著"是跟"水平低"一样吗？"水平提高不显著"并不一定代表水平低啊，只不过那水平似乎保持不变，或所进步的地方不明显罢了！真是难搞！

如此博大精深的华文文化，我必须承认我只懂得些许而已！不过以上的那些真是让人感到不平！唉... 算了！为了这个而烦恼，倒不如想开一点，有空看看曼联踢球，打打电动，发发简讯解解闷，陪朋友去看电影，到家附近的公园遛(橙)狗... 生活是多么的灿烂美好呀！我们的人生既有那么长的路还要走，又何必为了一个考试而搞到遍体鳞伤，精神恍惚？不是吗？=D

所以我终于想通了：尽力而为就足够了，给我一个A1 我已经心满意足了！哈哈哈XD

yo pple... i m here again. =) apparently liu lao shi has forgotten that some of us (i mean those who were away for the FPS competition) have not sat for the bsp test. HAHAHA. as a chinese rep, do you think i shd remind her? yes? of course not! NO WAY! i shdnt remind her (heeheehee *smiling cunningly)... or perhaps she is aware but would like us to spend more time on o level higher chinese instead (it would be very considerate of her to do so) *btw, i choose to believe in the latter...hahaha. after spending 3 yrs and being the last yr with liu lao shi, i still cannot understand, how come liu lao shi can be such a KIND, GOOD-LOOKING, GENTLE, SWEET, OPTIMISTIC, HUMOROUS, and most importantly, ADORABLE teacher? i tell you... SHE IS PERFECT! how i hope i can find a liu-lao-shi type of girl next time... hahaha >.<

To find an adjective to describe liu lao shi is easy...

First of all, congrats to the CmPS team "Read a book Live a life" (Liu Hao, Yu Fung, Jia Hong, Wei Ming and Guo Dan) who won 2nd place in the Australia FPS final. Though we end up with FIRST runner-up, we received a surprise special recommendation from the panel of judges to go for the world final in US... a bit unexpected! =)... =D... X)... XD... sadly, SOMEONE is not going with us! what a waste!

anyway, we lost to the first team in the prelim report but beat them in the on-site scoring... that's why our team is specially recommended. here is our on-site exhibition!

cool rite? i shall post more photos up after my make-up bsp assessment, which is on... when arh? hahaha =D

TOTAL OWNAGE! Aphelion swept away all top three prizes in this year's PW grand final! 前所未有的大屠杀! Aphelion is "destined to own" (refer to a label found at the bottom of our trophy) haha... wondering what mrs ke will say during consortium assembly next week... XD

anyway, got first for SL is within expectation, but third for chinese is definitely out of my expectation... i must admit my SL project is much more imba than my chinese one... Evidence: i missed out one (quite important) line of the script during the SL project presentation... and still can get first worh? haha... nobody knew it lar? not even my other 5 team members?! hahaha =)

for the chinese project, it went prefectly well. the audience engagement is really fanastic! i must thank all who applauded SO loudly for me and sunshuo during our presentation, without which i dont think we can clinch third position... thank you so much for all your support!

OMG! OMG! OMG! i cant believe that 太空漫步馆 got into grand final... when i broke the news to sun shuo, he thought i was joking... hahaha... his facial expression is like "dun bluff lar... i am not stupid enough to fall into your trap"! hahaha... but seriously, my presentation is so so, and the three judges keep throwing qns at me and sun shuo during the Q&A session... qns after qns... one after another for the whole 5 mins!!! in the end, they are only selecting 3 out of the 7 project works in the 2nd round audition... which means every grp stands a 42.8571428%-chance of getting into the grand final! erm... izzit very high? i dunno.

anyway... i have higher hope for my SL project than this language-arts project... and to be honest, i dun feel like changing anything for my LA project liao, esp under such a GHOSTLY teacher mentor! hahahax... XD

and i hate the subject teachers! (a bit random hor? hahaha) we give them so many presents on teachers' day and they are giving us EIGHT tests in return next wk... haven study a single thing! no TIME to study!! =(

okay... i shall go NTUC now to buy a few packets of TIME. see ya. =)

FINALLY, i was able to watch ALONE among all kinds of obstacles---tests, past year exam papers, physics test, project works, and last but not least, tickets being sold out!! hahaha

well, the entire movie is really well-plot, esp the 180-degree twist near the end... and the sound effect, as i have expected, is surperb!!! believe it or not, just 3 min into the movie and the audience has gotten a "surprise"... later we realised tt it is nothing but a bday surprise for the protagonist... haha! XD

one pity is that, i watch the trailer beforehand... then i know when and what to expect already... which makes the movie not scary anymore... what a spoiler! =( SIGH! but i still got shocked, stunned and terrified here and there bcos not all the exciting scenes are captured in the trailer...

anyway, now i can understand why ALONE movie ticket was selling out so fast on the day of BSP outing... bcos watching a horror movie is like a trillion times more exciting than riding roller coaster... and cheaper as well! hahaha =)

what a perfect day... woke up at 5.30 in the morning and the first thing i know is that man utd has beaten tottenham 1-0! *salute to Nani... reached sch at 7 and was shocked to see the class in a beyond-description state of mess! wow... luckily mrs seck didnt hold me responsibility or my day is ruined. haha =)

in the afternoon, we have projects day grand final audition. everything went juz as well!!! the Q&A session is EXCEPTIONALLY well-handled (u know, sun shuo and i are renowned for crapping) except for questions on certain copyright issues which are also quite rampant in other grps' projects... anyway, the other grp in the chi cat is oso down with the same problem, so we still stand a chance of going into the grand final!!

for service-learning project, i am relieved that i didnt screw up anything! otherwise my grp leader liu hao said he is going to call me up at 12 midnight to tell me ghost stories.. hahax... and i am SO scared! hahaha... XD

TESTS OVER!

2 tests in a row! 1 hr 20 min of continuous writing! 1 eng compo to be handed in after sch! today is crazy!

first is IHC. it was an easy peaper. for those who dont know, the two qns are exactly the same given to class 4D. hahax. I know because I had done my "revision" and on top of that, I know my teachers well. XD

following up is IHE. screw up nothing except for my handwriting. LOL. there are only 2 qns in the test, but they are split into 10 sub-qns during the process of meiosis. well, I was trying very hard to rush through the paper in 40 min but after the first IHC test, somehow the motor neurone of my hand is not functioning!

to make matter worse, "we have to fish out the eng expo" by today or else three marks will be deducted!!! my relay neurone, sensory neurone and motor neurone totally break down...

anyway, these are the last 2 tests accounting for this term's MSG. NO MORE TESTS for this term! YEAH! looking forward to hosting the students from hainan, china next wk. slack... slacking... slacked! hahahax =)

中学生现场翻译比赛华侨中学蝉联冠军

由联合早报、南洋初级学院联合主办的2007年全国中学现场翻译比赛于今天下午圆满落幕。这次的比赛吸引了27所学校的51支队伍参赛。比赛之激烈，可想而知。

比赛分成三个回合。第一回合是个人笔试，参赛者必须在45分钟内翻译一篇华文文章和一篇英文文章。因为每支队伍由三人组成，个人成绩总和最高的四支队伍将晋级第二回合。经过一番龙争虎斗，成功晋级的四支队伍是：华侨中学A队、莱佛士书院B队、华侨中学B队及莱佛士女中B队。其中，华侨中学A队的队员是我非常熟悉的，他们是：我本人(hahaha)、刘浩和李俊杰！个个都是佼佼者哦！自夸... XD

第二回合的第一部分是抢答题。每题2分，补答1分，答错不扣分。其实四支队伍实力不分上下，只不过他们按铃速度不够我们的快，所以我们取得了压倒性的胜利，暂时领先。这个回合的成绩如下：

华侨中学A队：21分
莱佛士书院B队：2分
华侨中学B队：2分
莱佛士女中B队：4分

第二回合是九宫格。四支队伍必须从九个格子（科学、政治、地理、文学、历史等）中轮流选择两个课题作答，每个课题有10个单词，参赛者须在1分钟内把英文单词翻译成华文单词，把华文单词翻译成英文单词。每答对一题得3分，答错不扣分。我们选了科学与政治...科学方面实在没话说，我们得满分！至于政治，不知何故的只得14分。尽管如此，我们在第二回合结束时依然独占鳌头。哈哈~ 现在让我们看一看积分榜：

华侨中学A队：65分
莱佛士书院B队：51分
华侨中学B队：20分
莱佛士女中B队：52分

根据第二回合的总成绩，有幸进入第三回合的三支队伍分别是：华侨中学A队、莱佛士书院B队、及莱佛士女中B队。第三回合是决赛的最后回合，也是整场比赛的高潮。每支队伍须派出一名队员，在两名南初同学的中英对话中进行即时翻译。我队的李俊杰同学不负众望，以高超的翻译技术，幽默的口语表达，稳健的台风，赢得评判们的青睐。

最终，华侨中学A队凭着非凡的整体表现及自强不息的奋斗精神，蝉联全国中学现场翻译比赛冠军！莱佛士书院B队屈居亚军，而季军则归于莱佛士女中B队。

在此，我们要衷心地感谢指导老师王老师所给予我们的训练、支持与鼓励。我们也要感谢来到现场支持我们的学弟。谢谢！！

If u miss the movie "shutter" - a box-office smash in Thailand and other Asian countries, u muz not miss this now. sounds lyk i m advertising for this movie. LOL! anyway, I noticed the movie poster, similar to the one below, was already put up at the bus-stop outside NY... it looks really cool!

Synopsis
Pim buries her past in Thailand and starts her new life with a caring and lovable husband, Vee, in Korea. Their marriage life seems to be all too normal with a decent and stable job, great friends, etc. All seems well - That is before Pim receives a telephone call from Thailand.

She is informed that her mother has fallen very ill due to a yet un-diagnosable disease. Pim and Vee travel back to her hometown to be by her mother's side. From the first moment she arrives in Thailand Pim experiences extremely vivid flashbacks of painful memories that she has tried so hard to forget. But there is something different about these flashbacks. The flashes conjure up a sense of innate warmth that is similar to the feeling of "someone" close to her.

Pim finds herself constantly haunted by these lingering feelings of attachment that compels her to confront her deep dark emotions that eventually lead her to remember that she has a twin sister. Now as her memories slowly comes back and the pieces of the puzzle begin to start to fall into place Pim eventually recognizes just what that innate sense of warmth is...

It is the feeling of being attached to another person by an organ that bonds two lives in such a way that she could never be free.

But that would be impossible?

What had to be done was finished; ended a long time ago.

Unless...? Pim is not alone!

And this is just the beginning of a horrifying realization that Pim will never be allowed to ever forget...what does not want to be forgotten!

the CURSE is back! sigh... whenever i see this "ammonia" person who likes to caution pple not to degrade themselves or else their mothers will be very sad, somehow I will have really-really-bad luck for the next 5 days!!! true enough, i missed my bus after sch on that very first day i met her! siao... and this happened for 3 consecutive days!!! OMG!

it wasnt the end yet. a day before projects day, we were supposed to move the tables and chairs out of the classroom but we didnt. on projects day itself, Mrs Ng came and looked for me at the terrace in the morning. "why are there tables and chairs in the class?!" i said nothing but promised her i would get it done after flag-raising! while moving the tables and chairs out, she suddenly stomped into my class (without knocking the door) and gave us a 5-min scolding for not following her instructions that was posted on the emb dunno how many years ago. "what kind of leaders are u?"... "cant even follow simple instructions!" erm... i thought it would be better for her to use this 5 min to share with us wad constitutes a good leader! hahax. anyway, how on earth can i rmb every single thing posted on emb. i mean we are forgetful sometimes. and i have even apologised to her at the terrace!!! so wads the BIG problem? i m really pissed at that point of time, but wad can i do? all i can do is to pray hard to god that all these will end before my chem test!

in preparation for maths test next week, i shall do some revision here. correct me if i am wrong! this is a qn taken from ten-year series. "explain y is ur luck lyk that and hence evaluate its turning pt." first construct an eqn where y = my luck = (my bday)x^2 + (my hp no.)x + my NRIC no. then differentiate the aforementioned equation and i will get the gradient of my luck, which is 4444x-31596.84, right? since coeff of x is 四条四, therefore my luck is lyk that lor. then to find the turning pt, i let dy/dx=0. so 4444x-31596.84 = 0 and x = 7.11, when x = 7.11, y = 1.30 and hence, the turning pt is (7.11, 1.30). hahax. WOW. no wonder everything went so well ytd (11 July). hahax. have lunch with Mr Ang (principal), Mr Hon (deputy principal), xu lao shi (BSP teacher) and Mr Koh (Hwachong alumni) at HC boarding sch after sch at 1.30pm. we had a lively discussion... bcos no one dares to touch the food before Mr Ang eats his share mah. =)

Well. Mr Hon left after 5 mins, so we have the photos taken without Mr Hon.

While on our way home, we met liu lao shi and wang lao shi outside the admin office. the first reaction from liu lao shi was: 吃饱了啊? hahax. seems that our main mission of going there is to eat... LOL!

Anyway, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

what indicators can we have to measure the quality of life in hwachong? that's the qn discussed in IHE lesson ytd... guess wad did we come up with? no. of pests in sch (meant to be sarcastic)! of course, no. of air-con in the campus and the length of breaks in proportion to lesson lesson are impt indicators as well! afterall, the quality of life in hwachong has been IMPROVING, dont u think so? and i think today is the best ever... triple periods of assembly + excused from double physics lessons and EP3 juz bcos of this "competition"!!! hahax

met my ECE-attachment instructor at freshmen electrical and engineering lab when my team was at station one. LOL! he still remembers me leh... hahax. and the ironical part is, the competition qn posted to us was taught by him during the attachment. double-LOL! so in the end, we spent merely 5-8 min to get the 100-mark qn completed!!!! Feeling surperb! =)

anyway, it was not a race for us... seriously! me, jianrui, sihao, yuhan and bryan were taking our own sweet time to stroll to our next stn. jianrui even bought a cup of bubble tea halfway through the "walk"... 强! in the end, we spent 2.5 hrs completing the 4 stns. but the best is yet to come... even though we were the 6th team out of the 12 teams to complete the race, to our surprise (or horror), we still managed to emerge as champion!!!!! wooohoooooo *applause plz =D

seeing our peers and juniors soaked in their wet uniform, we felt a bit peiseh... but that doesn't mean we didn't put in effort okay!

In conclusion:

A piece of advice for teams taking part in such competition:
SLOW and STEADY wins the race! hahaha XD

4 plus - jonathan, huihua, siquan...... arrive

6 plus - MAHJONG (gamblers: me, jonathan, huihua and vinette-the mahjong queen)
7:30pm - dinner
8:30pm - TV time: soccer match between Singapore n Australia
9 plus - MAHJONG again
11:25pm - home sweet home

MAHJONG HIGHLIGHTS:
vinette got scam by huihua n jonathan... she was waiting for ba wan to complete her qing yi se. in addition, she has got five tai in her hand alr!!! (one tai = $0.20) OMG! i tell u she is pro! learnt mahjong in pri sch somemore O.o

However, 天有不测风云, in the end huihua "gave" jonathan a jiu wan n jonathan won the game. the massacre was prevented juz in time thanks to huihua!
*a sigh of relief
missing a step to glory, vinette's long-awaited $9.60 was gone into the drain.
poor thing. (does it sound lyk jonathan's mother?? hahax)

Lesson of the day: WIN-WIN! XD
